Meta Voluntary Exit Offer 2026: Meta Joins Google and Microsoft
Last updated: November 5, 2026. Meta has not commented on the report yet. We will update this page as more is confirmed.
Meta is offering voluntary exit packages to some of its employees in France, according to the French publication La Lettre. A voluntary exit means the company asks people if they want to leave, and pays them a package if they say yes. Nobody is forced to take it.
That makes Meta the third Big Tech company in under two weeks to offer paid exits:
- Microsoft offered voluntary exits to about 60,000 employees on October 26.
- Google confirmed on November 4 that it has been offering voluntary exits in five countries since June (full details).
- Meta is now doing the same in France.
The Meta offer itself is small. But together, the three tell you a lot about where Big Tech jobs are heading. Here is what each company is offering, and what it means if you are a software engineer.
Meta's Offer: Key Facts
| Detail | What we know |

| Country | France only (so far) |
| How many | About 100 of Meta's ~300 employees in France could be affected |
| Severance | 2.15 months of salary for every year worked |
| Extra leave | Up to 10 months of "mobility leave" at 80% of gross salary |
| Other support | Training for a new career, or help starting a business |

What Exactly Is Meta Offering?
The plan uses a French legal process called RCC (rupture conventionnelle collective). In simple words: the company and the employee unions agree on a deal, and then employees can choose to leave under that deal. It is always voluntary. Companies in France use it because it is much simpler than a forced layoff there.
Here is the reported deal:
- Severance: 2.15 months of salary for each year you worked at Meta. So someone with 5 years at Meta would get about 10.75 months of salary.
- Mobility leave: up to 10 months of paid leave at 80% of your salary, to look for a new job or retrain.
- Career help: training for a new career, or support if you want to start your own business.
Talks between Meta and employee representatives reportedly started in July 2026. Meta has not said which teams are included.
This is not new for Meta in France. In 2023, Meta used the same kind of agreement there, which was expected to lead to about 88 people leaving out of roughly 350.
Why Is Meta Doing This?
The short answer: AI is expensive, and Meta is cutting costs everywhere else to pay for it.
- In May 2026, Meta cut about 8,000 jobs, around 10% of its workforce. The cuts hit Reality Labs, the Facebook app teams, recruiting, sales and operations. Meta also cancelled plans to fill about 6,000 open roles.
- Meta plans to spend $125–145 billion on capital costs in 2026, mostly on AI data centers and chips. That is roughly double what it spent in 2025.
- At the same time, Meta has moved thousands of people into AI-related teams.
So the money is not disappearing. It is moving from people to computers, and from older products to AI.
Meta vs Google vs Microsoft: The Three Offers Compared

What this means for India and the US: right now, only Microsoft's offer covers employees in India and the US. Google's and Meta's current programs are outside both countries. (Google did run voluntary exit programs for some US teams in 2025.) If you work at Meta or Google in Bengaluru, Hyderabad or the US, these specific offers do not apply to you today.

Why Are Companies Choosing Voluntary Exits Over Layoffs?
All three companies have run layoffs in the last two years. So why switch to voluntary offers now?
- It is kinder and calmer. People who already wanted to leave get paid to go. Teams don't have to deal with surprise layoffs.
- It is easier in Europe. Countries like France and Germany have strict rules for forced layoffs. Voluntary deals with unions are faster.
- It still makes the company smaller. If enough people say yes, the company saves money without picking names.
But a voluntary exit program is often a warning sign. Companies usually use them when they want to shrink. If not enough people take the offer, layoffs can follow later. None of the three companies has said that will happen, but it is worth keeping in mind.
What Should Engineers Do Now?
Whether you work at Meta, Google, Microsoft or anywhere else in tech, the safest plan is the same: stay interview-ready. Here is how.
1. Update your resume now, not when you need it
Write down what you shipped this year while you still remember the details. For each project, add one line about the result, with a number if you can (for example, "cut page load time by 40%").
2. Practice coding interviews once a week
Most coding interviews come down to about 15 patterns: two pointers, sliding window, binary search, trees, graphs, heaps, dynamic programming and a few more. One problem a day, or one practice interview a week, keeps you sharp. Start with our free DSA guides.
3. Learn system design if you are SDE 2 or above
Mid-level and senior roles almost always have a system design round. In a system design interview, you plan a large app (like a chat app or a news feed) and explain your choices. Start with What is System Design?, then try our case studies.
4. Get some AI experience
All three companies are moving money into AI. Engineers who have built something with AI, even a small internal tool, are in a better spot. Expect interviewers to ask: "How have you used AI tools in your work?"
5. If you are offered a voluntary exit
Don't decide in a rush. Work out how many months the package covers, what happens to your unvested stock, and how long a job search might take (often 2–4 months). Our Microsoft voluntary exit guide has a full checklist, including notice period, gratuity and visa questions.
