Microsoft Voluntary Exit Offer 2026: Who Is Eligible and Should You Take It?
Last updated: October 27, 2026. Microsoft has not shared every detail in public yet. We will update this page as more is confirmed.
On October 26, 2026, Microsoft offered a voluntary exit package to a large part of its staff. A voluntary exit means the company asks people if they want to leave, and pays them a package if they say yes. Nobody is forced to take it.
About 60,000 employees are reportedly eligible. That is roughly 1 in 4 of Microsoft's ~223,000 full-time staff. The offer covers four countries: the US, India, the UK and Canada.
The offer arrives while Microsoft spends heavily on AI. The company plans to spend about $190 billion on capital costs in 2026, mostly on data centers and chips for AI.
If you are at Microsoft and deciding, or you just want to be ready in case your company does something similar, this guide covers the facts and a plan for what to do next.

What Exactly Did Microsoft Offer?
Microsoft calls it a Voluntary Exit Offer. Eligible employees got an email with a link to their own offer details.
Here is the deal, as reported:
- Who: Employees at level 70 and below in teams that opted in. Microsoft uses numbered levels for every role. Level 70 and below covers almost everyone, from new grads up to some senior leaders. GeekWire reports it includes general managers and some people with vice president titles, but not corporate vice presidents.
- What you get: A package equal to Microsoft's standard severance: base pay based on your level and how long you have worked there, stock that keeps vesting for a period, health coverage for a fixed time, and career transition help (for example, resume and job search support).
- No conditions on age, tenure or performance. This is different from Microsoft's earlier offer in April 2026, which was only for long-serving US employees.
- Not every team is in. Each team decided whether to take part, based on its business needs. Some sales, marketing and engineering teams said no.
Amy Coleman described it as giving employees "a new choice" if they are already thinking about a future outside Microsoft.
One important caution: The 60,000 number comes from an unnamed source quoted by CNBC. Microsoft itself has not confirmed the total, and it has not said how many people it expects to leave. Being eligible does not mean 60,000 people will go.
Why Is Microsoft Doing This?
Two forces are pulling at the same time:
- AI costs a lot. Building AI data centers is very expensive. Microsoft is trying to keep its profits healthy while it spends about $190 billion this year.
- AI changes how much work needs people. Like other big tech companies, Microsoft is reshaping teams around AI tools. Fewer people may be needed for some kinds of work.
A voluntary offer is a softer tool than a layoff. People who already wanted to leave get paid to go, and the company gets smaller without picking names.
Microsoft Job Cuts: Timeline
This is not the first change this year. Here is the recent pattern:
| When | What happened | Size |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Two rounds of layoffs | About 15,000 roles |
| April 2026 | First-ever voluntary retirement offer (US only, long-serving staff) | About 8,750 eligible; over 30% reportedly accepted |
| July 2026 | Layoffs, mainly in Commercial and Xbox teams | About 4,800 roles (~2%) |
| October 26, 2026 | Voluntary exit offer, 4 countries | About 60,000 eligible |
When a company runs voluntary programs and layoffs in the same year, it usually means it is serious about getting smaller. Microsoft has not said whether more layoffs will follow if too few people take the offer.
What It Means for Microsoft India
India is one of only four countries in this offer, so it matters a lot here.
- Microsoft has about 22,000–23,000 employees in India, across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Noida, Gurugram and Pune.
- Microsoft has not shared how many Indian employees are eligible.
- Reports say Indian employees have until December 1 to decide. Microsoft's own message did not give an India-specific date, so check your offer email.
Should You Take It? Questions to Ask Yourself
Only you can decide this. But here are the questions that matter most. (This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Read your own offer carefully and ask HR about anything unclear.)
1. Were you already planning to leave?
If you were going to look for a new job in the next 6–12 months anyway, a package is free money for something you were going to do. If you love your team and your work, there is no reason to leave just because an offer exists.
2. How many months can you live without a salary?
Most job searches take 2–4 months, sometimes longer. Add up your savings plus the package. If it covers at least 6 months of expenses, you have room to search calmly.
3. What happens to your stock?
Microsoft says stock keeps vesting for a period. Find out exactly how many shares will vest after you leave, and which ones you will lose. Unvested stock is often the biggest number in the whole decision.
4. India: notice period, gratuity, insurance
- Notice period: In India, many companies want you to join within 30 days, but a normal notice period is 60–90 days. If you leave on December 31, you can tell recruiters you are an immediate joiner. That is a real advantage.
- Gratuity: Gratuity is a lump sum Indian law requires after 5 years of continuous service. Ask HR how it is counted in your package.
- Health insurance: Your company health cover ends at some point after you leave. Buy a personal policy before then, because new policies often have waiting periods.
- PF (Provident Fund): You do not lose it. You can move it to your next employer.
5. US: are you on a visa?
If you are on an H-1B visa, you generally get a grace period of up to 60 days after your job ends to find a new employer, change status or leave the US. That is a tight window. Talk to an immigration lawyer before you accept.
6. What does the job market look like for your skills?
Engineers with AI, cloud and infrastructure experience are still in demand. If your work is in an area that is shrinking, a clean exit with a package may be better than waiting for the next round of layoffs.
If You Take It: A 5-Week Interview Plan
You have about 5 weeks between now and the December deadline, and then a month until your last day. Use that time. Hiring usually picks up again in January, so if you are ready by then, you are ahead of the crowd.
This plan works for anyone, even if you stay at Microsoft.
Week 1: Know where you stand
- Pick 3–5 target companies and the level you want (for example, SDE II or Senior).
- Update your resume. For each project, write one line about the result, with a number if you can.
- Take one practice interview to find your weak spots. It is much better to find them now than in a real interview.

Weeks 2–3: Coding (DSA)
Most coding interviews come down to about 15 patterns: two pointers, sliding window, binary search, trees, graphs, heaps, dynamic programming, and a few more.
- Go through one pattern per day using our free DSA guides.
- Practice the questions companies actually ask. Start with Microsoft's most-asked questions, since many companies ask similar ones.
- Say your thinking out loud as you solve. Interviewers score how you explain, not just whether your code works.
Week 4: System design
If you are applying at SDE II level or above, expect at least one system design round. In a system design interview, you plan a large app (like a chat app or a URL shortener) on a whiteboard and explain your choices.
- Start with What is System Design?, then caching, load balancing and databases.
- Practice one full design every two days with our system design case studies.
Week 5: Behavioral and "why did you leave?"
Every interviewer will ask why you left Microsoft. The good news: a voluntary exit is an easy story to tell.
"Microsoft offered a voluntary exit package across many teams. I'd been wanting to work on [your goal], so I took it to focus on finding the right role."
That answer is short, true and positive. Do not complain about Microsoft. Then move on to what you want next.
- Prepare 6–8 stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Practice Tell me about yourself, because it is the first question in almost every interview.

What's Different About Interviews in 2026
If you have not interviewed in a few years, a few things have changed:
- AI comes up everywhere. Expect questions like "How have you used AI tools in your work?" Have one or two real examples ready.
- Some coding rounds allow AI assistants. A few companies now let you use an AI tool during the coding round. They then judge how well you guide it, check its output and fix its mistakes. Ask the recruiter what the rules are.
- The bar is higher. More experienced engineers are looking for jobs at the same time, so companies can be picky. Practice under real interview conditions, not just by reading solutions.
