How to Answer "Why This Company"

"Why do you want to work here?" is asked in every interview. It evaluates your research, genuine interest, and whether you will stay long-term. A generic answer signals you are applying everywhere. A specific answer signals you chose this company intentionally.

The Three-Layer Framework

A strong "why this company" answer has three layers:

Layer 1: Company Mission & Impact

Connect to what the company does and why it matters. Reference specific products, recent news, or the company's mission statement. Show you understand the domain.

"Google's mission to organize the world's information resonates with me because I've seen how search quality directly impacts access to knowledge. I worked on a search relevance project at my previous company and saw firsthand how small improvements in ranking algorithms can change user outcomes."

Layer 2: Technical & Cultural Alignment

Explain why the technical challenges and culture match your skills and preferences. Reference specific technologies, engineering blog posts, or open-source projects.

"Amazon's leadership principle of 'Bias for Action' matches how I work. I thrive in environments where decisions are made quickly with 70% of the information, and I can iterate based on feedback rather than waiting for perfect data."

Layer 3: Personal Connection

Make it personal. Why does this company matter to YOU? A personal story creates a memorable impression.

"I grew up in India and used Amazon's delivery service when it first launched there. Watching the logistics network evolve from 2-day delivery to same-day delivery in my hometown showed me the engineering scale behind the scenes. That's the kind of impact I want to contribute to."

Research Checklist

  • Company's recent earnings call or annual report : mention a specific metric or initiative.
  • Engineering blog posts : reference a specific technical challenge they solved.
  • Leadership principles or values : pick 2-3 that genuinely resonate with you.
  • Recent product launches : show awareness of what the company is building.
  • Your interviewer's background : if they published a paper or gave a talk, mention it.

Company-Specific Tips

  • Google: Emphasize innovation, scale, and impact. Reference specific products you use daily.
  • Amazon: Study the 16 Leadership Principles. Name 2-3 that match your values.
  • Meta: Talk about connecting people, open-source contributions, or the metaverse vision.
  • Microsoft: Reference cloud computing, developer tools, or the cultural transformation under Satya Nadella.
  • Apple: Focus on product excellence, user experience, and attention to detail.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying "the salary is competitive" : never mention money as a reason.
  • "It's a great company" : too generic. Everyone says this.
  • Not researching : if you cannot name a specific product or initiative, you have not done your homework.
  • Copying from Glassdoor : interviewers can tell when you are reciting generic praise.
  • Not connecting to your own experience : the answer must link the company to YOUR skills and goals.
